STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES: WHAT ARE THE INDUSTRY STANDARDS?

7 December 2023 - Realising the magnitude of standard operating procedures that form the backbone of operational integrity and regulatory compliance, a Global Classroom (GC) session was conducted for UHL2422 English for Technical Communication on 7 December 2023

Hosted on Microsoft Teams, the global classroom was an initiative by five (5) instructors from UHL2422 course, including Ms. Nurkarimah Yusof the UHL2422 Course Coordinator.

In this virtual learning environment, Dr. Noraisha Yusof, Senior Power Systems Engineer at National Grid ESO drew the attention of 60 eager participants with the intricacies of 'Standard Operating Procedure through the Glass of Industry'.

Standard operating procedures (SOPs) have supreme significance to ensure consistency, safety, and efficacy across various sectors in every industry. Non-compliance to the procedures who serve as guardians especially in highly regulated fields can lead to severe repercussions.

Dr. Noraisha Yusof stressed that compromise in safety should never be an option whether for individuals, the environment, or for the reputational of one's company or institution.

As a seasoned professional in the field of power systems, the GC speaker captivated the participants by accentuating that technical communication has supreme significance not just within the scope of standard operating procedures. She highlighted that effective communication is imperative from low to high risk in industrial settings.

Technical communication is significantly influential for presentations at both internal and external levels, in fostering collaboration with external peer groups, teaching or managing colleagues, dealing with stakeholders, government, policy makers or regulators which can even extend to media.

It is also noteworthy that data, evidence, cost, and risk which are all the key strengths should be prepared to ensure the effectiveness of communication within the industry.

In summary, the global classroom session successfully offered a holistic viewpoint on industry practices. The interactive and meaningful session equipped the participants with insights that would be useful in their future respective roles in the industry, careers, and personal lives, in addition to the course assessments.
