CML CELEBRATES POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS ACHIEVEMENTS IN HI-TEA

Aisyah Khaleeda stood at the podium in Megaview Hotel, where the Centre of Modern Languages (CML) held their inaugural CML Postgraduate Hi-Tea 2021 on 15 December from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. to celebrate their postgraduate students’ achievements, and admitted that UMP was in actual fact, chosen for practical reasons. She said that her decision to pursue her Master’s at UMP was because it was nearer to home.

“I did not even know I could do my Master degree in English at UMP as it is known to be a technical university. However, I learnt a lot from my supervisor and her research team and I don’t regret it,” she shared.

Fatima Ali Lghzeel from Libya, who has also just completed her Master degree by research in English Language Studies, also shared with all attending how fortunate she was that she was well guided in her research endeavours. The event was attended by 50 people physically under strict SOP while there were about 20 guests attending virtually. Attendees comprised CML academic staff, existing postgraduates, potential students, and virtual attendees also included education attaches from Ghana Commission and Indonesia Malaysia Education, representatives from Yayasan Pahang, and student agents from China. The event was also streamed live on CML FB page.

Apart from celebrating the achievement of CML’s alumni who graduated successfully in the year 2020 and 2021, the event was also organised with the intention to inspire current students still completing their studies as well as to disseminate information on the postgraduate programmes that are offered by CML, information on sponsorship opportunities for postgraduate studies from Yayasan Pahang and Maybank. It was also aimed to build good networks with CML current students, prospective students and academic staff of CML.

The event began with a welcome speech from the Dean of CML, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nik Aloesnita Nik Alwi. Then, Assoc. Prof Dr Hafizoah Kassim gave a presentation on all the postgraduate opportunities CML offers, such as Masters by research, PhD by research and Master by coursework programme, which is Master of Science in Technology-Integrated Language Studies (MSc.TILS). MScTILS is a 40-credit coursework programme that focuses on language studies with the integration of technology and this programme can be completed within 3 semesters if taken full-time. This programme has also received its full accreditation from MQA this year and the first batch of this programme (also known as TILS01) has graduated successfully.

This Hi-Tea event was then followed by presentations from representatives from Yayasan Pahang and Maybank. Yayasan Pahang was represented by Puan Nor Azean binti Othman, Manager for Scholarship & Programme Unit and Puan Zakiah binti Saleh, Assistant Registrar from Loan Unit who joined the event virtually. They presented the different types of scholarships and education loans that could be applied by CML postgraduates, while Mr. Nurawi b. Abd Rashid, the Regional Head of Maybank Bancasurance, Pahang Kelantan Terengganu, explained the education loans offered by the bank. CML Postgraduate Society was also officially launched during the event and letters of appointment were given to Mr. Shafeirul Zaman bin Abd Majid, the committee of CML Postgraduate Society. The alumni of CML received a certificate of appreciation for being part of CML family.

It is hoped that this event has given great experiences to the current as well as potential CML postgraduates to be more motivated in pursuing and completing their studies.
