EMPOWERING STUDENTS' MALAY LANGUAGE VIA GLOBAL CLASSROOM

On January 20, 2022, the Centre for Modern Languages successfully conducted a Global Classroom (GC) session for the course UHF2192: Bahasa Melayu Komunikasi via Google Meet. The participants of this event were the students of UMP, who had enrolled in the Bahasa Melayu Komunikasi course in semester 1 2021/2022, as well as some international students who had requested to participate in this Global Classroom. The guest lecturer, Dr. Balazs Huszka from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), delivered his lecture on 'Tempat-Tempat Menarik' (Interesting Places). The instructor of this course who organised this event was Ms. Jamilah Bebe Mohamad.

In this course, students learned Malay vocabulary such as nouns, verbs and adjectives related to interesting places in India, Indonesia, Brunei and Malaysia. Not only did the students learn the Malay language, but they were also able to experience the beauty of the interesting places that were virtually introduced to them. According to Josephine Kate Marianne Herb, 21, UMP-Reutlingen University (HsRT) Bachelor of Business Engineering with Honours Program student, this session is fascinating and gives her the motivation to continue learning Malay because Dr. Balazs himself is a German who is fluent in Malay. This shows us that the Malay language is not only applicable and relevant in Malaysia, but also in other countries.

We hope that this event can be repeated in the future and that we can learn more about the Malay language across borders and cultures.
