FOREIGN LANGUAGE WEEK 1.0 2021

20th to 24th September 2021- Foreign Language Week 1.0 2021 or known as FLW 1.0 was held for a week from Monday to Friday. This program involved five foreign languages offered at UMP which are Arabic, Malay, Mandarin, German and Spanish Language. It was a joint venture between the Foreign Language Department and Language Support Community, Centre for Modern Languages (CML) and the UMP Student Clubs.

Foreign Language Week 1.0 (FLW 1.0) is one of the efforts that the centre has taken in showing support to encourage UMP students to explore the joy of learning foreign languages in addition to their own mother tongue and English Language. A total of 168 students had participated in this interesting and beneficial program.

On the 20th September, the program began with an opening ceremony at 9.30am with speeches from the program director and Head of Program. After that, the program continued with the Mandarin session for two hours where the students learned how to mark the Han Yu Pin Yin tone and read the pronunciation correctly.

On the following day, the program continued with an Arabic Language session. Among the activities conducted throughout the session are learning vocabularies from Jalur Gemilang song in Arabic and playing interactive games. Then, 5 winners were selected based on the fastest and highest scores. Malay Language session continued the next day where students were introduced to the Malay Language era, race and ethnicity in Malaysia and elements of language and culture related to the Malay Language. Finally, students answered the quiz on quizizz platform.

On 23rd September, students were experienced to learn German phonetics by reading correctly in German language and then followed by answering the questions given by the instructor. The last day was the Spanish Language session where the students got to know the Spanish culture, learned the alphabet and vocabularies of Spanish Language through the “Happy Birthday” song. Finally, the program was graced by the closing speech from the Dean of Centre for Modern Languages. The closing ceremony became even more interesting with the announcement of the winners for each language.

“I managed to join four over five sessions and gained a lot of experience and new basic knowledge there. The weeks were so enjoyable. I did not find that time flies so fast, and I did not realize time has passed because of it.
